Quick answer

Managed SFTP hosting costs $15 to $1,000+ per month depending on storage allocation, number of SFTP users, and features like compliance tooling and automation workflows.

  • Budget ($15–50/mo): Bridglet, SFTP To Go — best for small teams with simple vendor file drop needs.
  • Mid-range ($50–200/mo): SFTPCloud, FilePulse — more users, more storage, automation features.
  • Enterprise ($200+/mo): AWS Transfer Family, Azure Blob SFTP, Files.com — full compliance platforms or hyperscaler infrastructure.

Pricing breakdown by tier

Budget: $15–50/month

Budget-tier managed SFTP is a fully hosted service with no server management, typically supporting 1–10 SFTP users and 10–100 GB of storage. These plans are self-service, have transparent pricing, and are designed for teams that need simple vendor file drops without compliance complexity.

Hidden costs to watch for

The advertised plan price is rarely the final bill. These are the most common sources of cost overruns with SFTP hosting:

warning

Egress (data transfer out) charges

AWS Transfer Family charges $0.04/GB for data transferred through the SFTP endpoint, on top of standard S3 egress fees. Azure charges standard blob storage egress rates. For teams transferring hundreds of GB per month, this can easily add $50–200/month to the base cost.

What to do: Ask providers whether their plan includes a transfer allowance, and what the per-GB overage rate is before signing up.

warning

Per-user fees beyond plan limits

Files.com charges $4/month per additional system user beyond the plan limit. If you provision one SFTP account per client and you have 50 clients, that's $200/month on top of the $199 base plan. Always calculate total cost at your projected user count, not the base plan price.

What to do: Count your expected SFTP user accounts now, and multiply the per-user cost against that number. Look for plans with a flat unlimited-user option.

warning

AWS Secrets Manager + Lambda (password auth)

AWS Transfer Family does not natively support username/password authentication. To enable it, you must build and maintain a Lambda function connected to Secrets Manager. Secrets Manager costs $0.40/secret/month. With 10 vendor accounts, that's $4/month added. Lambda invocation costs are typically small but non-zero. This is a hidden infrastructure cost many teams discover after deployment.

What to do: Factor in Secrets Manager, Lambda, and CloudWatch log costs when pricing out an AWS Transfer Family deployment.

info

Custom hostname and SSL certificate costs

Some providers charge extra for custom SFTP hostnames (e.g., sftp.yourcompany.com instead of sftp.provider.com). AWS Transfer Family supports custom hostnames through Route53 custom alias records, which may involve additional Route53 hosted zone costs ($0.50/month per zone).

What to do: Confirm whether custom hostnames are included in the plan or billed separately, and whether the provider provisions certificates automatically.

warning

Azure requires premium storage tier for SFTP

Azure Blob Storage SFTP is only available on premium block blob storage accounts, not standard or cool tiers. Premium block blob pricing is significantly higher than standard storage—roughly 3-5x per GB. This means Azure SFTP storage costs are much higher than the $0.30/hr endpoint fee implies.

What to do: Use the Azure pricing calculator with your expected storage volume to get a realistic monthly estimate before committing.

Decision framework: which tier is right for you?

Work through these questions to narrow down the right price tier for your use case:

Step 1 How many SFTP users do you need?
1–10 users
Budget tier ($15–50/mo) — Bridglet or SFTP To Go will cover this.
10–100 users
Mid-range tier ($50–200/mo) — SFTPCloud or FilePulse.
100+ users
Enterprise tier — Files.com, GoAnywhere, or negotiate with AWS Transfer Family.
Step 2 Are you already on AWS or Azure?
Yes —
AWS Transfer Family or Azure Blob SFTP integrate natively with your existing infrastructure and IAM. Worth evaluating if you're already paying for those cloud services and need native S3/Blob integration. Expect $216+/mo.
No —
A purpose-built SFTP service is almost always cheaper, easier to configure, and faster to set up than AWS Transfer Family for teams without existing AWS infrastructure.
Step 3 Do you have compliance requirements (HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI)?
Yes —
Verify the provider has the specific certifications you need (SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA BAA, etc.) before signing. Mid-range and enterprise providers typically document this clearly.
No —
Budget-tier services like Bridglet or SFTP To Go provide encrypted file transfer and audit logs suitable for most non-regulated use cases without enterprise pricing.
Step 4 Do you need automation workflows or file event triggers?
Yes —
Look at Files.com, Couchdrop, or GoAnywhere, which include automation builders for file arrival triggers, transformations, and routing. These cost more but replace custom code.
No —
Simple receive-and-store use cases don't require automation features. Save the cost and use a budget-tier provider.

Typical recommendation by use case

Startup or SMB with vendor file drops: Bridglet Starter ($15/mo) or SFTP To Go Basic (~$25/mo)
Agency managing SFTP for multiple clients: SFTPCloud Business (€199/mo) or Bridglet Business ($149/mo)
Mid-market with compliance needs: Files.com Starter ($199/mo) or SFTPCloud with a BAA agreement
Enterprise already deep in AWS: AWS Transfer Family (~$216+/mo) with proper IAM setup
Enterprise needing automation + MFT: GoAnywhere or Files.com Power (~$400-500+/mo)

Start at $15/month — no credit card required

Bridglet's Starter plan includes scoped credentials, file retention policies, and a web dashboard. Deploy your first SFTP endpoint in under 60 seconds.
