Hidden costs to watch for

The advertised plan price is rarely the final bill. These are the most common sources of cost overruns with SFTP hosting:

Egress (data transfer out) charges

AWS Transfer Family charges $0.04/GB for data transferred through the SFTP endpoint, on top of standard S3 egress fees. Azure charges standard blob storage egress rates. For teams transferring hundreds of GB per month, this can easily add $50–200/month to the base cost.

What to do: Ask providers whether their plan includes a transfer allowance, and what the per-GB overage rate is before signing up.

Per-user fees beyond plan limits

Files.com charges $4/month per additional system user beyond the plan limit. If you provision one SFTP account per client and you have 50 clients, that's $200/month on top of the $199 base plan. Always calculate total cost at your projected user count, not the base plan price.

What to do: Count your expected SFTP user accounts now, and multiply the per-user cost against that number. Look for plans with a flat unlimited-user option.

AWS Secrets Manager + Lambda (password auth)

AWS Transfer Family does not natively support username/password authentication. To enable it, you must build and maintain a Lambda function connected to Secrets Manager. Secrets Manager costs $0.40/secret/month. With 10 vendor accounts, that's $4/month added. Lambda invocation costs are typically small but non-zero. This is a hidden infrastructure cost many teams discover after deployment.

Custom hostname and SSL certificate costs

Some providers charge extra for custom SFTP hostnames (e.g., sftp.yourcompany.com instead of sftp.provider.com). AWS Transfer Family supports custom hostnames through Route53 custom alias records, which may involve additional Route53 hosted zone costs ($0.50/month per zone).
